Weight Loss Injections and What Nobody Tells Women

Weight loss injections (aka GLP-1 medications) - Ozempic / Mounjaro / Wegovy-  are now the most talked-about drugs in women's health, and women are their biggest users. For many, the results are real and life-changing.

They work by turning down your appetite, so most women end up eating far less. That means your body can lose muscle along with fat, and early research suggests bone strength may drop too.

Muscle loss is worth understanding in depth, particularly for women. Muscle is an active tissue that protects your joints, supports bone health, regulates blood sugar, and becomes increasingly important through perimenopause and beyond. Losing it as a side effect of rapid weight loss is a trade-off that deserves a conversation — ideally before starting treatment, not after.

A large 2026 study found that people who stopped these injections regained around 0.9 kg a month on average. Building good eating and movement habits while you're on them makes a big difference once you stop.

None of this means these medications are bad. For women with obesity or conditions like PMOS (formerly PCOS) and type 2 diabetes, the benefits are well documented, including protection for the heart.

Ask about protein targets. Ask about resistance training. Ask about bone density monitoring. The prescription is the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it.
